Located in the pine forests of East Texas, Trinity County lies between the historic Neches and Trinity Rivers. Named for the Trinity River, it was created from Houston County in 1850. Historically, the economy of the area was based on timber production. However, with the completion of the Trinity River Authority's 90,000-acre Lake Livingston in the early 1970's, tourism and outdoor recreation have become vital industries.

Trinity County has two municipalities. Groveton (population 1,107) is located near the county's geographic center and is the county seat. Trinity (population 2,721) is situated on Lake Livingston's Trinity Peninsula. Other communities include Apple Springs, Centralia, Friday, Glendale, Pennington, Sebastopol and Woodlake.

Trinity County is located between two major north-south traffic corridors. Interstate 45, which links Houston and Dallas, is just to the west and within about 16 miles of the county's southern end. To get to Trinity County from Interstate 45, take Exit Number 113, Highway 19, and travel east to Trinity County.
US 59, which is the proposed route of the Interstate 69 extension through Texas, lies just to the east. Already a major route linking Mexico with Canada, US 59 is expected to increase in its importance once it is added to the Interstate Highway System. It is within 10 to 20 miles of the eastern and northern boundaries of Trinity County. To get to Trinity County from US 59, take the Highway 287 exit at Corrigan and go west to Trinity County, or exit at Livingston on Highway 190, go west to Onalaska and turn right on State Highway 356 and continue west on Highway 356 to Trinity County.
